Vernon Flyers Capture "C" Division Provincial Title

2010-08-09

2010 C Division Provincial Champions - Vernon Flyers

The experiences that one has throughout their life often out number the successes that they achieve. That is why each year, teams continue to endure and strive for that elusive prize in their respective division of play at the BC Ball Hockey Association Provincial Championships.

Victoria, BC was the setting for what would become history for the young Vernon Ball Hockey League and its "C" Division representative at the 2010 Provincial Championships.
The championship game saw the Vernon Flyers face the undefeated Campbell River Sting. The game was all that was expected, fast paced, physical and evenly matched. Vernon goals by Nick Stermer, Nigel Barker and an exciting game tying goal by Logan Massie with 17 seconds left in regulation time would set the stage for what every young Canadian hockey player dreams of. Scoring the winning goal in overtime to win a championship for the team.

The first 10 minute overtime period solved nothing as both teams were cautious in their execution. The second ovetime period opened up with both Vernon and Campbell River exchanging chances. With just over a minute remaining  a tape to tape pass from the other side of centre sent Ian Merner in on a break. Cutting across the slot Merner snapped a shot high past the glove of the Campbell River goalie, rippling the mesh and sending the team and 150 fans in the crowd into a frenzy.

Vernon Flyers Goalie Don Prowse was named the Championship Most Valuable Player. This is Prowse's second Provincial Championship win in the nets and second Most Valuable Player award at the event.

After the individual awards were handed out, Captain Erik Locke and his Assistant Captains were called up to raise the Cup. This is the moment that every team manager and captain works so hard for. It makes all the time and effort in building a team worth the effort. It is the dedication of people like Erik Locke that make our sport what it is today.

There are many reasons why the Vernon Flyers won gold at the 2010 BC Provincial Championships, the most important one was that they played as a team, strong and cohesive on all ends of the floor, scoring 26 goals, and holding their opponents to a grand total of 13 goals in 5 games. They say that defense wins championships but when coupled with a dangerous offensive game championhsips are born.

Congratulations to the Vernon Flyers 2010 BC Provincial Champions!!!
